What is your biggest tip for students applying to nursing school?

  • Believe in yourself! You are in control of your application, so make sure you’re giving 110% effort in everything you do. This includes utilizing your resources (like FNC) to make sure you understand the best strategies of being competitive.

What is your favorite part about FNC?

  • I really appreciate the network that students create amongst themselves. I can talk about the program from an administrative standpoint, but I think it’s invaluable to have students who are actually in the program mentoring our future nursing students!

DNP 2 - POPULATION HEALTH NURSING | SHE/HER/HERS

What was your pre-UW Nursing journey like?

  • I became a CNA after high school and volunteered at an emergency department and several community organizations. I pursued a degree in Public Health while I was accumulating nursing experience.

What is your biggest tip for students applying to nursing school?

  • Don’t give up! It is definitely a competitive and rigorous process, but if you set your heart and mind to it, you can become an incredible nurse.

What field(s) of nursing are you interested in?

  • I worked in pediatric emergency for 5 years, but now I have transitioned back into Population Health Nursing. I am currently pursuing a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Population Health Nursing. My work is focused on LGBTQIA+ communities of color, particularly with Black Trans Women. I hope to continue building sustainable community partnerships with the local LGBTQIA+ population to create a health system that provides equitable care.

Why did you start FNC?

  • I started FNC because I definitely felt discouraged to apply to nursing school. It was hard to find mentors and pre-nursing support/resources, especially as a student of color. With the help of amazing nursing students, I started FNC in 2017 to provide mentorship and equitable resources to underserved and underrepresented pre-nursing students.
